Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Cyclone Idai Appeal

Thursday 21 March 2019

Sky News is supporting the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC’s) launch of a new appeal to raise funds to help the millions of people affected by cyclone Idai. Across Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe people have been left homeless as communities have been cut off, leaving them in urgent need of rescue, shelter medical treatment, food and water.

The full scale of the disaster is still unfolding as search and rescue operations continue and more heavy rain is predicted. The UN predicts that this may become one of the worst weather-related disasters on record in the southern hemisphere.

Members of the DEC, who represent the fourteen global charities in the UK, are working with local partners to provide urgent assistance, but they can't do it without our immediate support. You can help save lives:

  • £5 could provide clean water for one family for ten days
  • £50 pounds could provide a family with food for one month
  • £100 could help build toilet and washing facilities for families who lost their homes

The UK Government will match pound for pound, the first £2 million donated by the public to this appeal.

To donate to the DEC emergency appeal, visit their website call the 24-hour hotline 0370 60 60 610, donate at any bank or Post Office or give £5 by texting SKY to 70000.
