Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Rohingya Crisis Appeal

Thursday 5 October 2017

Sky News is supporting the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC’s) launch of a new appeal to raise funds to help the hundreds of thousands of people fleeing their homes in Myanmar who are in urgent need of shelter, medical care, water and food.

In recent weeks, more than half a million people, mostly Rohingya women and children, have sought refuge in Bangladesh from violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. The flight of these Rohingya is the largest mass refugee movement in the region in decades. These people make up the largest mass refugee movement in the region for decades. Their communities are being torn about by terrible violence in Myanmar, formally known as Burma. It's estimated more than 300 thousand people don't even have shelter. Over a quarter of a million have no clean water. Many people need urgent medical attention but there are no large hospitals nearby. This risk of disease and infection is alarming.

The thirteen DEC member charities have come together to call for funds to respond to the severe humanitarian needs of those affected. Money raised will support their efforts to reach people fleeing Myanmar as well as their host communities in Bangladesh.
