This week, The Prince of Wales Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change (CLG), of which Sky is a founding member, launched a report on Sustainable Plans for Prosperous Economies. The report calls on businesses and governments alike to connect their immediate plans with their long-term strategy. At Sky, we know how important this is, and we are making plans to ensure we achieve our 2020 goals. Beyond this, we are looking to set longer term targets so that we play our part to protect our planet for future generations.

This launch is one of many important events that took place over the last two weeks in Morocco at the world’s biggest climate change conference, COP22.

Last year, I was lucky enough to attend the UN Convention on Climate change in Paris alongside our partner, WWF, to discuss how we can protect the world’s forests for the long term. We were delighted that this discussion helped to secure a new protected area of the Amazon by the Brazilian government and saw states and the national government set net zero deforestation targets.

Crucially, what also came out of Paris last year was an unprecedented global and binding agreement to curb greenhouse gas emissions. This agreement brings countries together in the aspiration to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C.This week; governments, businesses, NGOs and people who are directly impacted by climate change are meeting again to make sure these commitments are being put into action.

At Sky, we want to lead the way on reducing emissions and the transition to renewable energy. That’s why we’re committed to investing in on-site renewables, purchasing only renewable energy and developing more sustainable products. As part of our commitment to renewable power we’ve signed up to RE100 to help drive the clean energy revolution.

As a media company we also have a big role to play in inspiring others to take action for a better, more sustainable world.  That’s why we’re always working with our expert partners like WWF, and as part of organisations like CLG to not only shape what we do next as a business but also to call for action together.

We’re proud to have been recognised for our commitment to climate change by CDP on the Climate A List and within the top five of global businesses by Carbon Clear. However, we know we have a long way to go. We’ve plotted our performance against the targets required to keep our world within 1.5°C warming and now we look to what we do next, as a business, and with our customers and suppliers to achieve this.
