Alastair Bruce and Dame Joanna Lumley join Sky News for the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort in Ultra HD

Sky News has confirmed plans for coverage of the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort on Saturday 6th May across TV & streaming, special programming and podcasts.

Widely considered ‘THE Coronation expert’, Sky News royal events commentator Alastair Bruce is an encyclopaedia of royal history with an unrivalled knowledge of the intricacies of the event. He’ll be with Sky News presenters Kay Burley and Anna Botting throughout the day, guiding viewers through the historic ceremonial proceedings.

Dame Joanna Lumley will be a special guest having ‘thrilled’ Sky News audiences at the Queen’s Jubilee last year. The Absolutely Fabulous actress will join the Sky News line-up on Saturday fresh from attending the Coronation service at Westminster Abbey as a guest of the King and Queen Consort.

Nearly 70 years after Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation – a milestone for TV broadcasting – a new generation of people around the world will be able to watch the King and Queen Consort crowned in the clarity of Ultra HD, for free on Sky News. Viewers will get the best seat in the house wherever they are and on any device with multiple live stream cameras available to watch on the website, App and on YouTube. The cameras will be located at key locations for the day’s events, offering unprecedented access to the pomp and pageantry.

In addition to the live coverage, a special 30-min documentary ‘King Charles: My King’ with Niall Paterson will air on Sky News on Sunday 30th April at 8pm. The documentary travels the country exploring public opinion towards the King and the monarchy, taking a temperature test for support, and looking at the challenges that may be ahead for the new Head of State. It will also be available to watch on the Sky News website, YouTube and On Demand on TV.

A three-episode podcast miniseries ‘Queen Camilla: For the love of Charles’ will launch on 3rd May. Fronted by Kay Burley, the podcast follows Camilla’s journey to becoming Queen, speaking with those who know her well and asking, how Camilla and the Palace have turned public opinion from her being the ‘most hated woman in Britain’ to being embraced as the new Queen.

In a milestone for TV broadcasting, Sky customers can watch the King and Queen crowned in the clarity of Ultra HD, for free on Sky News channel 501 and on Sky Showcase channel 106 (7am-3pm). The Ultra HD broadcast will be available to those watching on Sky Glass or Sky Q via the red button. Non-Sky customers can watch UHD coverage on the Sky News YouTube channel with a compatible TV.

Coverage will also be available to watch for free on Freeview channel 233, Virgin channel 603, BT channel 313, Saorview channel 23.

Ad breaks will be removed between 9am-3pm on Sky News to ensure uninterrupted coverage of the main Coronation programme on Saturday 6th May.

The Coronation on Sky News

6am-5pm, Saturday 6th May

Ahead of the centrepiece event, presenters Kay Burley and Anna Botting will lead coverage throughout the day following the procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey ahead of the service.

Kay will be outside Westminster Abbey from 6am speaking to well-wishers and some of the dignitaries and celebrities who will be going to the Coronation. She’ll be joined by renowned educationalist and historian Sir Anthony Seldon for the Breakfast Show.

Anna will be live from Buckingham Palace at 9am with Patrick Harrison, former press secretary of 11 years to King Charles III and Sky News royal event commentator Alastair Bruce who will go on to commentate on the ceremonial service from 11am.

The cameras will then follow the procession back to Buckingham Palace where Dame Joanna Lumley will join the team for the famous balcony shots and flypast.

Sky News royal correspondent Laura Bundock will bring insight and analysis, while Sarah-Jane Mee and Kamali Melbourne will be amongst the action reporting live from the crowds on The Mall and other key locations around London.

5pm-11pm, Saturday 6th May

Mark Austin will reflect on the key moments of a historic day from 5pm at Buckingham Palace with Kristina Kyriacou, recent press secretary to King Charles III and Lord Simon Woolley, who has worked closely with the King.

From 8pm, Gillian Joseph will present highlights of the Coronation and how it was marked around the UK before Jonathan Samuels narrates a special highlights hour at 9pm. Gillian returns for the News at Ten and the paper reviews.

Content will also be available for free throughout the day on the Sky News YouTube channel, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram and Twitter.

Sky News’ network radio bulletins will broadcast live from outside Westminster Abbey before moving to Buckingham Palace. The service will be available for commercial radio stations across the UK to broadcast live with expert commentary from Alastair Bruce.

Audiences will also be able to leave messages of congratulations to the new King and Queen Consort via a digital tributes page on the Sky News website.

TV SCHEDULE - SATURDAY 6th MAY 2023

6am Kay Burley live from Westminster Abbey as the troops who will be taking part in the Coronation start to take up their positions in Central London. This is followed by the doors to Westminster Abbey opening and the procession taking place from Buckingham Palace.

9am Anna Botting live from Buckingham Palace taking viewers through the build-up to the Coronation including the King’s procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey.

All day Sky News royal event commentator Alastair Bruce will provide expert analysis throughout the day’s proceedings, including the Coronation service from 11am and the procession back to Buckingham Palace which begins around 1pm.

Sarah-Jane Mee and Kamali Melbourne will be reporting from the crowds in The Mall and other key locations around London throughout the day.

Early afternoon Live coverage from Buckingham Palace as the Royal Family gather on the balcony and the fly-past takes place to mark the Coronation of the King and Queen Consort.
