How we’re supporting Safer Internet Day 2014

Tuesday 11 February 2014

Once again this year we’re delighted to be supporting Safer Internet Day on February 11th 2014. It marks the coming together of many companies, schools and organisations to celebrate ‘creating a better internet together’ under the guidance of our friends at the UK Safer Internet Centre. Access to the internet can do so much to open up opportunities for all, and at Sky we want to keep this experience a positive one for the entire family.

Over the past year, in addition to continuing our default blocking of inappropriate adult content on our public WiFi network, The Cloud, we’ve launched Sky Broadband Shield. Available to all of our five million broadband customers, Sky Broadband Shied is a whole home solution that lets you choose the websites you want to access and blocks the ones you don’t, across all the devices connected to your home , including smartphones, tablets and games consoles. It’s free for all Sky Broadband customers, and includes additional security features to help protect your family from sites that collect private information or disrupt your device. At the click of a button, you can choose between PG, 13 or 18, or even customise protection into your own categories, and take charge of the websites your household can access.

Along with providing parents with effective and easy to use tools, we’re supporting families with education and choice. We’ve refreshed our Sky Online Safety Centre where there’s a Parents Guides and lots of top tips. We’re also supporting young people is through our free, interactive learning experience Sky Academy Skills Studios which takes schools behind the scenes at Sky. Here, students build life skills by using our state-of-the-art technology to make a TV report on subjects they’re studying at school. Cyberbullying and online safety is one of our most popular topics. We encourage a healthy mixture of facts and humour to give young people a good perspective on the subject and we’re always amazed by the quality of the students’ work.

We hope you enjoy Safer Internet Day, download Sky Broadband Shield, and take part in the nationwide conversation today.
