Lily Cole shines spotlight on Amazon for Sky Rainforest Rescue

Tuesday 19 February 2013

19th February 2013 sees the launch of ‘Lily Cole’s Amazon Adventure’, a short film featuring model, actress and environmentalist Lily Cole in her role as ambassador for Sky Rainforest Rescue – Sky’s partnership with WWF to help save one billion trees in the Amazon.

Since launching Sky Rainforest Rescue in 2009, Lily has made her first journey to the Brazilian  Amazon to see first -hand the projects that have been created to help tackle deforestation. Accompanied by multiple award-winning photographer and filmmaker, Adrian Steirn, Lily narrates each step of her journey for the short film framed in the heart of the rainforest.

‘Lily Cole’s Amazon Adventure’ investigates the importance of green economies in the state of Acre, North-West Brazil, exploring the strength of measures in place and looking at ways for local people to make a sustainable income living from the rainforest. Lily considers the feasibility of creating her own product in Acre to support and help develop new market opportunities for sustainable forest materials such as rubber.

As part of her work with Sky Rainforest Rescue, Lily will also make her directorial debut with a self-directed piece to accompany ‘Lily Cole’s Amazon Adventure’.  The audience will be taken on an awe-inspiring journey as Lily documents her experiences with those in the forest, capturing the raw beauty of an environment that remains intact despite enormous human destruction.

Lily Cole commented, “Sky Rainforest Rescue is an initiative which I’m incredibly passionate about. I am deeply committed to initiatives that try to protect the environment, and am excited by the potential that the rubber industry offers the Amazon and communities within it. I loved the opportunity to get behind the camera and capture an extraordinary journey."

‘Lily Cole’s Amazon Adventure’, a short film created in the heart of the rainforest with Lily Cole, will air on Sky Arts in March 2013.

Lily Cole’s edit will be available to view from February 2013 at www.sky.com/rainforestrescue

Sky Rainforest Rescue

Sky Rainforest Rescue: a partnership between Sky and WWF which began in 2009 and aims to help save one billion trees in the state of Acre, North-west Brazil. Every minute, an area of Amazon forest the size of three football pitches is lost and global deforestation is responsible for up to 15% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions – that is roughly the same as all the world’s cars, planes, trains and ships put together.

Tackling deforestation must play an important part in how we fight global warming which is why, through ‘Lily Cole’s Amazon Adventure, Sky, WWF and Rainforest Rescue ambassador, Lily Cole, hope to inspire people to get involved and help save a billion trees.

The public can make regular donations to Sky Rainforest Rescue, by adopting a jaguar from £3 a month, sponsoring an acre of forest or, making a one-off donation of any amount with £20 helping to save 1000 trees, or even taking part in a fundraising event.

Sky has commissioned 10 programmes on the Rainforest and run over 130 hours of related content across the channels over six specially created ‘Rainforest Weeks’ of content.  Lily Cole’s programme on Sky Arts will feature as the next ‘Rainforest Week’ of programming in March and will be the one of two new features. The other programme being the movie OKA which has been specially purchased to run as part of this week of content.
