Sky Original films Mass and The Colour Room secure nominations at the 2022 BAFTA Film Awards

Thursday 3 February 2022

The EE British Academy Film Awards nominations were announced earlier today, with Sky Original film The Colour Room, nominated in the Outstanding British Film category and Emmy ® Award winner Ann Dowd nominated in the Supporting Actress category for her role in the Sky Original film Mass.

Zai Bennett, managing director of content, Sky UK & Ireland says: “Both Sky Original films take us on a wonderful and unique journey and have been revered by critics and our customers alike. Ann Dowd is exceptional and a thoroughly deserving nominee. Alongside The Colour Room, with its genuine fairy tale quality and a stellar cast. Huge congratulations to everyone involved!”

The Colour Room follows the journey of a determined, working-class woman, Clarice Cliff, as she breaks the glass ceiling and revolutionises the workplace in the 20th century. Clarice (Phoebe Dynevor) is a vivacious young factory worker in the industrial British midlands of the 1920s. Her creativity and ambition drives her to move factory to factory, despite the financial impact on the household she shares with her widowed mother Ann (Kerry Fox) and youngest sister Dot (Darci Shaw). Bursting at the seams with ideas for colours and shapes, Clarice takes more and more dangerous risks – but she manages to stay one step ahead of the workhouse and impress the eccentric factory owner Colley Shorter (Matthew Goode) on the way with her talent and innovation.

Apprenticed to renowned Art Designer Fred Ridgeway (David Morrissey) and with support from Colley and other women in the factory, Clarice fights her way through to design the unprecedented Art Deco ‘Bizarre’ range. In the middle of the Great Depression, she ensures the factory’s survival and her future as one of the greatest Art Deco designers and a household name.

Mass is set years after an unspeakable tragedy, where two sets of parents (Reed Birney & Ann Dowd, Jason Isaacs & Martha Plimpton) agree to talk in an attempt to move forward. Featuring critically acclaimed performances from the four actors, Fran Kranz’s writing and directing debut thoughtfully examines their journey of grief, anger and acceptance.

Both films have received widespread critical acclaim:

The Colour Room:

“inspirational and highly enjoyable” Daily Mail

“charming British film” The Sun

“There is plenty of period charm to this enjoyable biopic” What’s on TV

Mass:

“Dowd’s Linda, a career highlight … She’s phenomenal” The Daily Telegraph

“Mass would have been – and absolutely should have been – a major Oscar player” Independent

“Mass is performed with impeccable intelligence and sensitivity” The Guardian

“Dowd and her co-leads put in extraordinary performances, so it's no surprise that many tip them for awards contention” Digital Spy

Sky Originals The Colour Room and Mass can be found on Sky Cinema, as well as streaming service NOW with a cinema membership.

The nominations follow two BAFTA Film Award wins in 2021 for Promising Young Woman, which scooped both the Outstanding British Film and Original Screenplay categories, the first time a Sky Original film has won a BAFTA.
