Sky Sports' new-look weekend of football
The waiting is nearly over ahead of the most eagerly anticipated Premier League season in years.
While we’ve enjoyed a great summer of sport, watching fantastic productions from our F1®, rugby union and cricket teams, we’ve also been busy planning for the biggest ever season of football on Sky Sports.
Plenty has changed since the last ball of last season was kicked. From the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson to three new managers at the top three clubs, there is also a new look to our weekend football programming.
We kick-off our live Barclays Premier League coverage with Saturday Night Football, where David Jones and Jamie Redknapp will be joined in our brand new studio by an audience of around 150 fans.
They will be able to ask Jamie for his views on all the team news in Team Talk at 2.30pm, before enjoying the unique experience of watching all the 3pm kick-offs in the studio.
Attention then turns to Swansea against champions Manchester United at 5.30pm, when all eyes will be on David Moyes. The audience can join the post-match debate and bring plenty of energy to an exciting new programme.
Add Game of the Day and Match Choice to the mix, and it really is a strong Saturday offering. And for one day only, we’ll be giving every home in Britain a taste of our new-look weekend of football thanks to our free day of Sky Sports, where Sky Sports 1 will replace regular programming on Pick TV and Sky 2.
Looking further ahead, Super Sunday headlines the return of Jose Mourinho to Chelsea, while the new look Monday Night Football will see Manuel Pellegrini’s first game in charge of Manchester City.
Last Thursday, new Monday Night Football analyst Jamie Carragher appeared in the studio for the first time, previewing the season alongside Gary Neville. The two were great rivals on the pitch, but now they’re on the same team and they’ll both bring their own insights into the game as they analyse all the weekend’s big talking points and build up to the 8pm kick-off.
In his two years since retiring as a player, Gary has completely changed the face of football analysis on TV. Jamie will come in and bring energy, freshness and an opinion that will challenge Gary. He’ll be as an analyst just as he was as a player: strong-minded, wholehearted and incredibly hard-working.
In particular, Liverpool against Manchester United is one not-to-miss on Sky Sports on 1 September, when the pair are sure to have plenty to say about their former teams.
As ever, the challenge for us is maintaining the high standards we’ve set ourselves for the last 22 years, continuing to make our coverage the best it can possibly be. I hope you’re all as excited as we are.
