Taking our biggest summer of sport to the next level
As we build on the momentum of our biggest ever summer of sport, we’ve found it really interesting to reflect on the ways our customers have been enjoying the line-up on Sky Sports.
We’re really focused on bringing our customers as close as possible to the action – it’s what we’re all about, and we’re proud to be constantly pushing the boundaries of new technology to offer the best possible experience for sports fans.
We understand that sport is all about special moments. That’s why we always set out to make sure our customers never have to miss a game, wicket, goal or transfer story – wherever they are.
August was a cracking month for our mobile apps, seeing the biggest ever usage of our Sky Sports News app on smartphones, with over 3 million unique users. Over 4m unique users also checked in to our Sky Sports Football Score Centre app, while the Sky Sports app for iPad had a record month, with more than 560,000 unique users making the most of the service.
What’s clear from these numbers is that second-screen experiences are really valued by our customers. There's something really satisfying in helping customers find new ways to get closer to their favourite sports and we're delighted that we can use new digital technologies to help the Sky Sports experience even deeper and more engaging.
Following a golden summer of cricket, with only 21 runs and 4 overs separating England from their greatest ever Ashes victory, our Sky Go service attracted really strong audiences throughout the series. During the summer, there were more than 16m Sky Go viewing sessions for the Sky Sports Ashes channel – a huge number and something we’re all really thrilled about.
In addition to connecting with our customers through Sky Go and our apps, we also consider our social media channels as a very important way to reach, inform and engage sports fans. As an example, as the door slams shut on Transfer Deadline Day, our #SkyDeadlineDay Twitter hash-tag was used 146k times, while @SkySportsNews had 194k mentions.
As we look beyond the summer to even more of the best sport on Sky, we‘re looking forward to providing our customers with the most flexible technology so they can continue to take their viewing to the next level.
