Westworld launches with 1.84 million – the biggest audience for a brand new series in Sky Atlantic’s history
The first episode of futuristic series Westworld has been watched by a consolidated audience of 1.84 million, making it the biggest launch of a brand new series in Sky Atlantic’s history.
After being watched by an overnight audience of 458K on Tuesday 4th October, more than 1.38 million viewers have taken advantage of catching up on the show flexibly over the following seven days, through their Sky+ recordings and on demand. The figure will increase even further once viewing through the Sky Go app and online streaming service NOW TV is taken into account.
Westworld’s consolidated audience of 1.84 million beats the launches of all other brand new series in Sky Atlantic’s history, including the first seasons of both Game of Thrones (1.45m) and Fortitude (1.74m).
The ten-part series has received widespread critical acclaim both in the UK and in the US, with The Daily Telegraph calling it “A fantastically cool and dark reboot of Michael Crichton’s 1973 film.” While The Mail on Sunday’s Event magazine said it’s “a script with the cool intelligence to match the awe-inspiring visuals.”
Zai Bennett, Director of Sky Atlantic, said: “With an A-list cast, incredible visual effects and a story-line that gets you immediately hooked, it’s great to see that so many of our customers are enjoying Westworld as much as we are. This HBO series is one of the most talked about shows of the year, and anticipation has never been higher to find out what happens next.”
A hedonistic theme park staffed by artificially intelligent hosts, Westworld is a place in which human guests can explore their every appetite, no matter how noble or depraved. This dark odyssey from JJ Abrams (Star Trek Beyond, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Jonathan Nolan (Interstellar, The Dark Knight) and Lisa Joy (Pushing Daisies, Burn Notice) examines man’s primal nature and the dawn of artificial consciousness.
Westworld stars Anthony Hopkins as the park’s founder and creative director Dr Robert Ford. Alongside Hopkins, the series stars Ed Harris (Pollock, Apollo 13) as The Man in Black, Thandie Newton (Mission: Impossible II) as madam Maeve Millay, Evan Rachel Wood (Thirteen, Mildred Pierce) as Dolores Abernathy and James Marsden (X-Men) as Teddy Flood.
Watch Westworld exclusively at 9pm on Tuesdays on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV. Download the Westworld press pack here.
