£30 million to tackle systemic inequality

Back in 2020, Sky made a bold commitment, pledging £30 million to tackle systemic inequality. Since then, we’ve been working to create a culture of inclusivity at the heart of Sky, where colleagues from all backgrounds can thrive. On-screen and off, we’re working to make our team as diverse as the communities we serve. We also partner with specialist organisations that support groups at risk of marginalisation to advance inclusivity in society.

Standing up to racism in sport, with Kick It Out

We’re making sport more inclusive, with Kick It Out. Our three-year partnership is taking our anti-racism message to millions of sports fans. Together, we’re also sponsoring Black and ethnic minority students to gain MBAs in Football Industries at Liverpool University. Creating the next generation of leaders, able to make the industry more inclusive from within.

Keeping kids in school, with Mission 44

School exclusions have a devastating impact on children’s life chances, reducing their employment opportunities, raising their risk of mental illness and making it more likely that they’ll get involved in criminal activity. Black, Gypsy, Roma and Traveler pupils suffer a disproportionate rate of school exclusions. Sky has partnered with Mission 44, Sir Lewis Hamilton’s foundation, to address this.

Supporting Black entrepreneurs, with the Black Equity Organisation

We are working with the Black Equity Organisation to deliver the Future 100 Growth Fund, which backs Black British entrepreneurs to launch and grow their businesses. Historically, a tiny percentage of venture capital invested in UK start ups went to Black entrepreneurs. From 2009-19 it was just 0.24% of funds, with a fraction of that – 0.02% - going to Black female entrepreneurs. The Future 100 Fund is addressing this, providing funding, strategic advice, supply chain access, coaching and mentoring, to help people succeed.

Advancing disability inclusion

We’re proud to be part of the Valuable 500, a global business collective of 500 CEOs and their companies, all working towards greater disability inclusion. As an Iconic Leader, we’ve made a commitment to seek out new ways to make the world of business more inclusive. This means removing barriers and creating a more supportive environment for people with disabilities.

TV for everyone

Everyone should be able to enjoy the TV they love, when and how they want. That’s why, we make our products and services as accessible as we can. Features like high contrast display, voice search, voice control and voice guidance help our customers to navigate our products and watch unmissable TV on their own terms.

Our original TV shows are all audio-described, as well as 26% of the film and TV on our Sky channels. Across our 26 entertainment and cinema channels, 100% of our programming is subtitled.

Creating inclusivity at Sky

We believe that a more inclusive society is better for everyone, and a more inclusive Sky will do better for all our customers. Inclusivity matters because it’s fair. Because it gives everyone a voice. Because it empowers us all to fulfil our potential and make a meaningful contribution.

We’re creating change within Sky, in four important ways:

1.

We’re pushing to represent the people we serve better, through the makeup of our team and the partners we work with.

2.

We’re building a workplace culture where people can be themselves, express themselves and shine, no matter who they are or what background they’re from.

3.

We’re encouraging talented colleagues from all walks of life to lead.

4.

And we’re using the power of our platforms to shine a light on issues of social injustice.

Diverse perspectives lead to balanced decisions, smarter innovations, and stronger performance. Our inclusive culture enables us to keep reinventing what we do, in a fast-moving world.

20 and 5 by 2025

We want our team to represent the people we serve. It supports the communities in which we live and work, and makes Sky stronger. So we’re aiming for our team to be 20% from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds, with 5% Black, by 2025. So far, we’re on track to meet our ambition.”

Gender equity

We’re working to ensure that women have a fair chance to succeed and progress at Sky. It’s better for Sky, and better for society. Our aim is for half our leaders to be women, and today, we’re at 37%. We’re also committed to increasing representation in areas like technology, where both at Sky and in the wider world, women are under-represented. Just 19% of the UK tech workforce is female. At Sky, women represent 26% of our tech business and we’re aiming to reach 30% by 2025.
